Star Attacking Duo Rely on Penalties to Bail Out Sloppy Blancos
Real Madrid dropped two more crucial points in the title race on Sunday, drawing 1-1 at home to Real Sociedad. With Barcelona now five points clear at the top of the table, Carlo Ancelotti's side needs to turn things around quickly. Los Blancos were lackluster for much of the match, and it was only Vinicius Jr. and Kylian Mbappé who could rescue them from a disappointing defeat. Here are our player ratings from the match: ### Thibaut Courtois - 6 Courtois could do little about Real Sociedad's goal, which was a well-taken penalty. He made a few good saves throughout the match and kept his side in the game. ### Dani Carvajal - 5 Carvajal was solid defensively for the most part but offered little going forward. He was replaced by Alvaro Odriozola in the second half. ### Eder Militao - 6 Militao was comfortable on the ball and made some important interceptions. He was also strong in the air. ### Antonio Rudiger - 5 Rudiger was caught out of position for Real Sociedad's goal and was lucky not to concede a penalty. He improved as the match went on but was still not at his best. ### Ferland Mendy - 6 Mendy was solid defensively and provided some good attacking support. He linked up well with Vinicius Jr. and created several chances. ### Toni Kroos - 5 Kroos was not at his best and struggled to control the midfield. He was a constant threat down the left flank and scored the equalizer from the penalty spot. ### Karim Benzema - 6 Benzema was quiet for much of the match but did have a few chances to score. He was replaced by Rodrygo in the second half. ### Kylian Mbappé - 7 Mbappé made his first start for Real Madrid and showed why he is one of the most exciting young players in the world. He scored the winning penalty and was a constant threat to the Real Sociedad defense. ### Substitutes ### Alvaro Odriozola - 6 Odriozola replaced Carvajal in the second half and provided some much-needed attacking impetus down the right flank. ### Eduardo Camavinga - 6 Camavinga replaced Kroos in the second half and added some energy and dynamism to the midfield. ### Rodrygo - 6 Rodrygo replaced Benzema in the second half and provided some fresh legs for the attack.
