2024 UK General Election: Record Number of Candidates to Stand

Prospective parliamentary candidates have been selected for the 2024 general election.

A record number of candidates will be standing on 4 July, beating the previous record set in 2017.

The 2024 general election will be held on 4 July and will see voters elect 650 Members of Parliament to the House of Commons. The deadline for candidates to submit their nomination papers was 14:00 on 4 May and a total of 4515 candidates have been nominated. This is the highest number of candidates to stand in a UK general election since 1945. The Conservative Party is fielding the most candidates, with 646 candidates standing. The Labour Party is close behind, with 639 candidates standing. The Liberal Democrats are fielding 460 candidates, the Scottish National Party has 59 candidates standing, and the Green Party has 41 candidates standing. There are also a number of smaller parties and independent candidates standing in the election. The full list of candidates standing in each constituency has now been confirmed and can be found on the Electoral Commission website. The 2024 general election is set to be a closely fought contest, with the outcome likely to be decided by a number of factors, including the state of the economy, the popularity of the leaders of the main parties, and the level of public anger at the government's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
